   Yay Creme Eggs! I just bought them today…always my favorite part of spring. My sister and I always got those speckled jelly bird eggs in our easter baskets, plus SweetTarts Chicks, Ducks & Bunnies, and the Cadbury Mini Eggs with the chalky shells. Those were my favorites.. though it might be funny to do a review of the giant hollow white chocolate bunnies, too.

   For nostalgia sake, and absolute sugar rush I *have* to have a Palmer’s Chocolate Easter Bunny.  Preferably Buster or Daisy.  Save the sugar eyes for last.  Mmmm…

   Maybe only a true sugar addict would EAT one but when I was little, I would even eat the sugar eggs with the little duckie/pond scenes inside (most commonly found at Cost Plus World Market nowdays).  I think the review would be pretty short, though- “Tastes like sugar, frosting is stale and flavorless.”  =)

   The Dove truffle eggs are pretty good.  Though my favorite are the Hershey’s Eggs (also the Cadbury mini eggs, which are the same thing, but with a slightly rougher shell).

   I just picked up a bag of Twizzlers “Tweeterz” which are candy covered twizzler bites.

   They are one of the strangest candies—like candy covered bubble gum.  Way sweet and strangely flavored, but I think you should give them a try and a review for shits and giggles

   Ooh, very nice Erin! I’ll keep an eye for those on the half-off table after Easter ... I think they’re very similar to the Lake Champlain ones that I already picked up.

   Angela - someday I’ll have to post all of my terrible sugar addiction confessions that include things just like that. Oh, the comments section will get long on that one!

   Brian - I’m hoping I can photograph my whoppers eggs before I eat them all ... I should never nibble before photographing.

   Raedia - I picked up those SweeTarts chicks and stared hard at them ...they weren’t on sale. Maybe at one of the other stores I hit this weekend.

   Julilla - I’m not sure I’ve ever had a REAL non-hollow chocolate bunny in my life. It might be time.

   Amanda - I don’t think I saw those Twizzler things at the RiteAid ... off to Savon and Target this weekend!

    You have to try the Reeses PIECES Eggs!  I buy bags & bags of them this time of year and they never last long in this house! So far I have resisted buying them but I don’t think I can hold out any longer.

    I have to say that, despite the fact that I absolutely love candy (and sugar in general), I’m not up-to-date on some of the newer Easter fads.  For instance, I love love love the Cadbury eggs, and have come to equally love some of the knockoffs (caramel, snickers, etc)... but it’s overkill with the filled eggs!

    Mm, the Sweet Tarts chicks and bunnies - what is it about those Easter shapes that make the candy that much sweeter?  I don’t buy Sweet Tarts at any other time!  And I love the whopper eggs.

    When we were little, the kids in my family (five in all) would get goody baskets from my mom.  Foil-covered coin-shaped chocolates (some were cripsy, some were peanut butter, etc), molded chocolate (white chocolate lambs and crosses, etc), jelly beans, and so forth.  We would trade for our favorites, and even though those candies aren’t necessarily my favorite sweet, they hold a nostalgic sway over me.

    I’m not sure what they’re called - in fact, I think they might taste kind of gross - but upon first bite at a young age I was enraptured by these brightly colored, sugar-y eggs.  The hard shells were bright colors (not pastels), and inside - definitely not marshmallow, but something white and chewy.  They’re kind of big, like a Cadbury… but slimmer.  Ring any bells?  Well, that’s my two cents’ worth.

    Did you take the photo above?  I really think it’s a pretty good picture.  Me likey.  It would’ve been funny if you had a bunch of chocolate bunnies in a row, but one of them had its head bitten off.  A little morbid, but funny.

    Hershey’s Eggs (why don’t they make these year round?)—If you pick up a pack of Hershey’s Kissables (they’re mini hershey kisses covered in a candy shell)  they are remarkably similar to the Hershey’s Easter Only chocolate eggs.  Yum!

    I remember Helen Grace Walnut Fudge Eggs (or their non nut equivalent the Milk Chocolate Butter Eggs).  My mom would divide up equal shares amongst the family and I would slowly slice off and savor my portion of it.  It can be really rich, but it was a nice Easter treat.  (It is very similar to the See’s Chocolate Butter Eggs.)

    Are you going to look at the Necco malt egg vs. the Whopper? As a kid, I think I preferred Necco, but they are a bit harder to find.

    Have you ever had Daffin’s chocolate?  They are based in Sharon, PA.  If you are talking Easter candy, you NEED to talk about Daffin’s.  They have filled eggs that are awesome.  2 to try: Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Filled Egg and Milk Chocolate Melt-A-Way Egg
    My family would always slice them to eat.

    Desertwind - it’s raining too hard to see the mountains! (I’m sure there’s snow there. It was freakin’ cold last night.) Those marshmallow eggs aren’t really a fave of mine, but I thought about picking them up but didn’t see them.

    Karla - I think they are a kind of marshmallow egg - I know what you mean, they’re not huge, about two inches long. But not really marshy, especially if you let them sit out. 

    Grace - See’s! I totally neglected See’s!

    Marvo - thanks! I take all the photos on candyblog, but I’ve been having a lot of fun with the Easter stuff.

    Miki - I didn’t see the Reese’s pieces eggs, but I’ll keep my eye out.

    Liz - I really like the Kissables, but the shell isn’t quite the same, and of course because they’re smaller the chocolate hit isn’t as big. But still good.

    Mila - I love the almond m&ms; and prefer them in the pastel colors!

    Tripp - I’ve already got the Whoppers, but I’ll keep my eye out for the Necco - good idea.

    Kallie - I feel so stupid! I was just in Youngstown/Pittsburgh two weeks ago! We stopped at Baldinger’s (awesome!) but didn’t go all the way to Sharon. I’ve been there a few times before too, when I’d go to Reyer’s. Daffin’s filled chocolate eggs are INSANE! Now I’ve got Daffin’s on my list for a special trip - probably in June.

    I have finally taken the time to go back and look at all your hard candy reviews and I am sufficiently mullified.  I particularly enjoyed your tamarindo reviews- I had a friend who always brought me bizarre tamarindo candies to try from her trips home to Mexico.  Some of the packaging is priceless!

    If you ever need someone to hit downtown L.A. with you in search of new foreign candies, I’m your girl!  So much more interesting that my usual quests for faux-designer purses!

    Those marshmallo eggs! Yeah, they were in solid primary colors. And, boy, do they make your teeth hurt. Funny, they’re sort of icky, but yummy.

    With five kids in our family and not much money, I have the feeling they’re kind of a cheap basket filler!

    Hmm. Mmmmmm. Peeps.

    I’ll have to send you some pix of my (cute!!!!) niece and nephew hunting eggs in grandma’s garden, following clues to find their baskets, looking at their stuff… But, sign of the times? They get only one chocolate bunny and the rest is little toys and underwear and things.

    God, it’s a wonder any of us have a tooth left in our mouth with all the holiday candy my siblings and I binged on!

    Butterfinger creme eggs are dreamy…

    I could live on Cadbury Mini Eggs.  Their crunch and texture is so great.  And weird.  But greatweird.

    I loooove Robin’s Eggs, but do you remember there being malted milk balls that had candy coating but not that layer of chocolatey stuff that Whoppers/Robin’s Eggs have?  I swear I remember such a thing existing and me preferring it, but I could be wrong.

    This isn’t related to Easter candy, but when I was in the next town over today with some friends, they tipped me off to this GREAT British grocery store and they had a gigantic selection of British candy.  I finally got my hands on a Curly Wurly bar.  They also had some barley sugar candy, but it was very expensive and the only flavor was lemon honey, which I wouldn’t care for.  They had Jelly Babies, but only the Manor House brand, not the Bassett’s, but they did have a multitude of other Bassett’s products.  Maybe I’ll send you some stuff sometime!

    I ran into something neat I’d not noticed before last week - Sweet Tarts Jelly Beans!  They were on sale too (only thing better than good candy is good cheap candy)!  So far I really love the ornage, red, and blue ones and I’m kind of undecided on the rest.  They seem to taste a lot like normal Sweet Tarts so far.

    I’m going to make a crotchety old-timer comment (i am 40, after all), but I don’t really like all this ‘modern’ Easter candy, now that the Big Names have started selling their year-round items in egg form and pastel packaging. Easter candy to me is: jelly beans (I knew I was getting grown up when I decided spice ones were bearable), malted milk ball eggs, and the bigger chocolate eggs with creme filling - preferably maple, but something fruity was a close second. I am able to find Russell Stover (or some such) maple creme eggs at some chains around me, but I do try to restrain myself from buying the whole bin. :^) And I always loved it if I got one of those big fancy eggs with some kind of filling, a cutaway, and maybe tiny spun sugar decorations. I can’t find those anywhere.

    the easter bunny had a tradition in our family that (sadly!) I have continued with my seven kids…chocolate CROSSES…or as my son calls them CHOCOLATE JESUS! who came up with these things??  but it wouldn’t be an easter basket without one in there.  my mom used to mail them to me when I couldn’t find, apparently they’re a hot item and the local wal-mart sells out of them almost immediately…go figure!
    also, have you reviewed jelly beans?  not sure which is my favorite but I think I have a tie between Smuckers and Starburst.

    I’m not sure what marshmallow eggs are, but they sound like the big, colorful “eggs” my mom would hide (along with better candies).

    They would then be traded by my older sisters with me to my detriment for the choice chocolate bunnies, and I didn’t like them then any more than I do now.

    I remember them as being the Easter equivalent of Christmas fruit cake.

    I have to add something about these marshmallow eggs we all remember.  They had the hard candy shell on the outside.  Like a few candies, the flavors can be best described as “very red, “purple” rather than by any fruit or fruit flavor.  They simply tasted of food dye.  The inside was a thick, dense marshmallow-like center with very little flavor.  When I was small, the Easter bunny would have my mom buy them at the bulk candy counter of Sears in Pasadena.  Yeck.

    First I went to Target, and would you believe that besides a few Hershey’s Miniatures and Nestle Eggs that they had no Easter candy?

    I did find some things, but I decided to wait on the chocolate bunny. I don’t know why I can’t bring myself to buy one, probably because many of the ones I got as a child weren’t real chocolate and I ate them anyway, in a sort of fit of anger and defiance and sugar withdrawl.

    Anyway, I found those strange eggs, they’re called Brachs Bunny Basket Eggs ... whatever that means. They’re like giant jelly beans, but instead of a jelly center they’re a granulated sugar fluff.

    Steph - I got the Starburst jelly beans and I’ve been enjoying them.

    There are so many new things out there, I don’t think I’m going to be able to get to them before the holiday, but I hope I can pick them up afterwards and at least give them a try then.

    Tricia - as we are close to the same age, I kind of have the same feeling about spice jelly beans. I even saw some at the store today, but they only came in a one pound bag and I didn’t really need THAT much nostalgia.

    Tara - I would buy anything called Butter Krak!

    I remember those awful bright colored egg things. I always wanted to like them and tried them and they were always gross.  But I ate them anyways because they were candy.  My favorite easter staple is the Brach’s classic jelly beans, which I can’t seem to find any other time of year. Other jelly beans are okay… but really, I don’t want my jelly beans to taste like Starburst, I want them to taste like jelly beans. 

    Also, I prefer the Cadbury’s cream eggs refrigerated so that I can eat all the chocolate, and just have the pure sugar filling at the end.

    Oh my gosh - as a jewish kid growing up I had to content myself with helping my friend eat her Easter basket, except that every year without fail my parents would pick us up a See’s bordeaux Easter Egg (my teeth hurt just thinking about it!)It is still the only time of the year when you can get the Bordeaux candies in the large size but due to my large size, I now resist temptation…

    Someone may have said this but an adult—or at least, once I could buy my own—favorite is the Russel Stover coconut baskets, in green or brown. Ridiculously delicious! I think one of the great things about Easter candy is that it can’t all be replicated year-round, making the Cadbury mini-eggs all the more appealing. (Or at least they refrain from making it year-round, sorta like Girl Scout Cookies.)

    Please help!! I am desparate for Brach’s Fiesta Eggs but the last time I saw them was ‘05 in Daytona Beach FL.  I bought all they had.  Nothing compares to them, and they leave a cool white paint all over your lips.

    I have to agree that the Brach’s Fiesta Eggs are one of the best candies you can buy at Easter. They ARE hard to find. But SO good if you can. I tend to buy all that I can find also.
