Five years ago some good friends exchanged their vows. During the reception I was talking with some of the other guests at our table about chocolate. Someone remarked that I seemed really passionate about candy and I should blog about it.
I went home that night and started a blog. Here it is, five years later and I’ve reviewed at least 1,500 individual candies and tasted probably 5,000 during my travels and attendance at trade shows. There’s still lots more to see, taste and review.

So thank you, sweet readers. I probably wouldn’t have continued if the blog did not grow as it has, the fact that you’re here, reading and responding really makes it worthwhile.
As a big thank you I’m doing some redesign work that I think you will enjoy (such as adding a spot where you can give candies your own 1-10 rating, make custom lists in your profile of favorite candies and better search features).
As a small thank you, I have a $50 gift certificate for Think Geek where you can spend way too much for novelty candy.
To enter the drawing just leave a comment here by Monday, April 12, 2010 at 9 AM Pacific PDT telling me what your favorite post on the blog is. A random commenter will be chosen and will receive a digital gift certificate valued at $50. Anyone can win though I don’t know how useful it’d be if you’re outside of North America.
Oh, and happy 5th anniversary to Robin & Amy!
UPDATE April 12, 2010 5:32 PM PDT: Congratulations to Jeny! She was chosen at random from all unique comments received. I’ve already sent her the digital gift certificate for Think Geek.

Commenting is not available in this channel entry.I actually loved the cookies ‘n creme comparison you did a while back. Happy 5 years, I LOVE the blog!
Happy birthday, Candy Blog! Love this site. My favorite posts are your candy previews, where you tell us about some of the fun new candies we can look forward to.
Congratz! Happy 5th Cybele!
I love learning about new candies in your blog! Thank you for all the great articles! Congrats on 5 years!
I loved your post on Albanese Krunchy Bears! they’re one of my favorites and you did a lovely job reviewing them.
I LOVE “The 110 Essential Candies for Candivores”. That was the first post I read on this blog, and it prompted me to search out other posts and follow you.
Congrats on the 5 year anniversary!
Happy Birthday! It’s hard for me to pick out one particular post, but your review of those Japanese barley sugar candies (the ones that are tea-flavored) have had me scouring LA for quite some time. I also get a kick out of reading the 1-rated reviews.
Congratulations, and thank you for a great 5 years, Cybele!
My favourite post was the one in which you introduced me to Chuao chocolates. I love them!
You have taught me a lot, you know… I used to think all chocolate was composed of much the same ingredients, and I really couldn’t understand why I’d like some and not others. “Mockolate” was a huge revelation for me!
Anyhow, thank you again! I love that you’re putting in a new feature for readers to rank candy. Awesome.
??Hello, oxoxo Well congrats, LOVE reading ur blog. I love candy that’s why, tehe…i don’t have a favorite post, i just love them all in general especially the pictures you add! Makes everything better??
Congrats on 5 years!
My favorite post was the one reviewing Bonkers which were absolutely nothing like the 80s candy. I love every post where you have rated something really low, as you have such descriptive phrases.
I mean, ‘woodsy flavor with a hint of nutmeg’ is well and good, but ‘like a citrus burp’ is just so perfect, it almost hurts.
Happy anniversary! I can’t decide if that picture is a close up of some sprinkles or a giant vat of banana Runts. I’m going with Runts. xo
I love when you talk about the Trader Joe’s candies. They always look so enticing but I am never sure of when to splurge and when to keep walking. Reading your blog gives me lots of happiness for my day!
Happy fifth!! This is one of my favorite blogs. I love reading about the new candies and I have to admit I enjoy the reviews of candy that didn’t make the grade. Here’s to 5 more!
The 110 Essential Candies for Candivores was my favorite one, if I had to pick!
Happy Blogiversary, keep up the good work! My favorite post is the one on Sees scotchmallow, because they’re one of my favorite candies.
Congratulations so much! <3 I think I’ve been reading, ooh, at least 4 of those 5 years, you’ve been quite the inspiration for me demanding American friends and relatives send me goodness.
Any of your posts on See’s stick in my head happily, I’d never heard of them prior to reading about them here, and then upon visiting America for Thanksgiving one year, they had a stand in a mall and I was like “NEED” and…gosh I loved those chocolates so much.
Also was amused by the post where I noticed that Trader Joe’s Milk Chocolate Hazelnut Delights are an identical product (must be the same supplier) to Marks and Spencer’s Operetta chocolates.
Also, you rock <3
Hmm, probably the giant gummy bear post, because it alerted me to the fact that such a thing exists.
congratulations! I hope to be reading you blog 5 more years down the road! (hey we need somewilling and daring enough to try new products)
Happy birthday, Candy Blog! My favorite post has got to be one of the Peeps Mash Ups ones. Perhaps the savory one? So ridiculously fun.
5 years? WoW! I just discovered your blog a few months ago.
My favourite posts by far are ones about the different flavoured KitKats. It fascinates me. Or anything about candy I can’t get in Canada!
Congrats on 5 years—excellent work (and so much fun for your readers!) My favourite posts are on the Japanese KitKats, especially the fruity ones. I actually read them all as a way to prepare for my trip to Tokyo last year!
My favorite would have to be “Same old things, different flavors” from 2008 (I’m fairly new to the blog but I’ve been back-reading recently). I’ve been a life-long fan of Cryst-O-Mint Lifesavers, and your description of them is exactly spot-on as I was never able to put into words myself. And I learned that they are a boiled sugar sweet and not a compressed dextrose candy, which I never realized before. I love this blog!
Oh, and one more thing - I love the reviews of Japanese candy. I’ve been a big fan of Japanese candy for years now, and sadly in my rural area it’s hard to find any. But based on your reviews I know what to look for instead of having to guess at what might be good when I actually find some.
I’ll resist the urge to type out David Bowie lyrics here, but congratulations on five years! I’m a newcomer to your blog, but it’s swiftly become one of my favourites; I love talking about food and hearing others do the same, especially when (as with you and I) we clearly have different tastes. It’s so enlightening! Plus, on a student’s budget, it’s hard to justify buying the fancy candies you get to try—I live vicariously through you.
Those are my favourite posts, when you try things that aren’t easily gotten at one’s local US drugstore, whether because they’re upscale chocolates or candies from around the world. I’ve dreamed for years of ordering Japanese KitKats, and until I can justify actually doing so, I can just look longingly at all your pictures and descriptions. Here’s to another good five years!
Happy Birthday to CandyBlog! I really enjoy the season-themed posts, like halloween or easter treats. My favourite specific post is probably the one about the Crunch bar, just because I love it so much!
I like reading about the Kit Kats from foreign countries. I also love when you review something new to the candy shelves, such as that S’Mores bar from a while back, so I know whether it’s worth a try or not. I have had fun reading Candy Blog over the years!
Congrats! I LOVE your peeps mash-ups because they make me laugh. Please do more! Thanks for keeping me entertained!
I’ve been a lurker of this blog for quite some time- always reading, never posting. But in honor of your fifth anniversary, I shall venture out of my shell! Picking a favorite posting is almost like trying to pick a favorite child; I love them all! But I definitely loved the Pocket Coffee. I had only just started my love affair with coffee and then saw your review of them. Thanks to your posting I fell in love with these chocolates too! If only they were easier to get…
I love Candy Blog! Thank you Cybele!
Happy anniversary. I am constantly referring back to this blog’s posts in my conversations. Probably the little mention of British candy bars you recently did is my new favorite. I’m seeking out British candy bars as my new thing.
Thanks for introducing me to Napoleon Sours! I love having them at my desk to fill my sweet and sour tooth.
My favorite post was the Scrummdiddlyicious (sp?) review because I have been *gasp* trying to eat less candy and might not have tried the bar if I hadn’t read the review and it has become my absolute favorite, I really need a major treat for making it through the day candy
First of all, congratulations on the anniversary.
I’m not sure what I would say has been my favorite post. A lot of the time when I read one of your reviews, I find myself having to be a little careful, especially if it is something that I’m likely to be reviewing myself. I don’t want to be too influenced by what you have already written.
I suspect that my favorite posts have been of different M&M/Mars products.
The post about Juntsuyu - it prompted me to buy some from J-list and I really, really enjoyed it! I’m already trying to figure out when I can justify getting more!
Congrats on the 5 years!
I’m know amongst my colleagues as the candy lady (i have a not-so-secret desk drawer full of it), and they about died when they found out about my addiction to your blog. This truly is one of my favorite sites.
I have many favorite posts, but the one on Ritter Sport Assortment is probably highest on the list. I got hooked on Knusperflakes as a result.
My favorite post was the Vosges Haut Chocolate Skulls one. Those look like such cool candies.
The Au’some Easter 3-Dees Gummies! because i tried them, and they were not only amazingly beautiful, but tasted sooooooooooooooo good too! YAY!
your blog is the best. you are who i wish i was - all my friends tell me i should blog because of my candy obsession, but i don’t think the world needs me since they have you. i just said this in another post, but my favorite blogs are your candy teases - i love knowing what is coming out so i can be hunting for it. happy 5 years!
Congratulations!! I love hearing about the new candy and all your adventures. It’s been so much fun!
Congratulations!
My favorite posts have to be the low rated candy ones… haha! I somehow derive amusement in your cleverly written way of your experience with candy that is not so good.
any post on Dots is my favorite because I looooove dots!
Five years? I just found this wonderful blog last week, I have a lot of reading ahead of me!
So in advance, thank you for all that enjoyable reading I have yet to experience, and congratulations on your anniversary.
My absolute favorite posts are when you cover NEW products that you get to preview at expos and events! Oh, and the Candy tease posts like this one! http://daily-deals-hub1.com/blog/item/candy_tease_april_2010/#When:18:40:00Z%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E
A happy 5th anniversary to you! Congratulations on your blogging success.
I don’t have any particular post that’s my favorite, but I love when you find a candy either superb or inedible. The 1 or 10 ratings are rare enough that I’m always really interested to see why something earned either extreme.
April 12th is my birthday, so maybe I’ll be especially lucky and win the drawing! At any rate, I enjoy this blog very much, and here’s looking at the next five years of yummy posts to come. :D
Happy Birthday! Many more to come I hope!!
My favorite posts are from the candy expo and other events. I love seeing the stuff they are going to have
Hi! i think i’ve read more than half of your posts…but i don’t think i’ve ever commented. i discovered cadbury minieggs because of you! along with salty licorice….my favorite post is probably the CVS deformed blue easter lollipop….that thing is just hilariousss
Congratulations on five years!
With so many reviews, it’s hard to choose one. I know, total cop-out. Actually, I take that back, I do know my favorite review. The Big Bite Gummy Bear review because of the gummy bear decapitation photo.
Once again, congratulations and I look forward to reading more of your reviews.
woo hoo, free junk! i’ve been reading the blog for well over a year and it is hands down my favorite candy-related website. thanks for the good times!
I LOVE when you do previews of new candies coming out! Thanks too for adding some new features, that will keep things exciting!
My favorite posts are the Candy Tease posts each month!
You did a series of Easter posts a few years ago on different chocolate Easter eggs. My favorite was about the Sees scotchmallow egg. I have since been hooked on scotchmallows and on your blog.
Congratulations! I’m not surprised you’ve flourished in the past 5 years, you have an amazingly comprehensive, thoughtfully written, beautifully photographed blog. Here’s to another five! Or ten…or fifteen…
My favorite posts have the be the crazy Kit Kats you review. I’m not motivated enough to seek out the obscure Japanese varieties, but I like living vicariously through your taste buds.
congrats! I am an avid reader and love your posts. let’s toast to another 5 years ok?
“So thank you, sweet readers”
I see what you did there.
Cybele, your blog is such a pleasure to read. I’m a sugar addict and you’ve given me the heads up on some incredible shops and treats I’d never in a million years have found on my own!
I’ve been reading your blog for a long time now, and ironically enough, my favorite post of yours was actually the one where you gave us a peek at your photography set up and techniques. Totally fascinating. That weird-ass blue, fanged easter sugar-yeti thing comes in a close second though…
I am at present coveting a Doctor Who sonic screwdriver replica from Think Geek! *crosses fingers*
Congratulations on five years! My favorite post is “Reese’s Enigma & Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter Eggs.” Gotta love the combination of Reese’s eggs and a clip of a great commercial.
Congratulations! Here’s to many more!
My favorite post was the one where you talked about the cotton candy/candy apple Hi-Chews. I picked some up on my next trip to Little Tokyo, and the cotton candy ones had my eyes rolling heavenward in ecstasy! That was a very well deserved 10!
Your Peeps mash-up posts are definite favourites. Coming from a country where Peeps don’t exist, the whole concept of them and your use of them was very entertaining to read
The first Hi-Chews post was my favorite, because it got me started on trying new and different candies that I normally wouldn’t even think about. Congratulations on the 5 years!
I’ve gotta say that my favorite is:
http://daily-deals-hub1.com/blog/item/milky_way_caramel/%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E
It led me to one of my favorite guilty pleasures!
Just wanted to wish you a happy blog birthday! Looking forward to many more delicious posts/reviews!
I love this blog. I have never met another writer with the same candy obsession. I only wish more candies from outside CA were showcased. Also, if you ever get the chance, try Swedish gele hallon (raspberry gum drops—delicately flavored, with a soft, springy texture) found in all major tourist traps in Stockholm. Sweden is a gummy super power, by the way…But if you ever go, try a basic supermarket or gas station for the best selection.
Whoops…I forgot to say my favorite blog post was for the Russell Stover dark chocolate covered marshmallow santa…I never would have tried cheap drugstore candy otherwise…!!!
Most delicious blog ever! Gets tastier every year!
Your site is AMAZING!!! Period. My favorite post was the Go Max Go Jokerz Candy Bar review (from 2/18/10), simply because it proved just how real and fabulous you really are. Screw the haters - keep on reviewing!
The post on the chocolate covered peeps. I searched high and low and managed to find and try both the dark and milk chocolate.
Congrats on 5 years!
I really enjoy any posts you do on malt balls…one of my favorite candies!!!
Love reading about new candies… And heading out to the store looking for the ones that sound good! (which unfortunately is most of them!)
Congratulations! Five years of mouth-watering photos and posts is definitely nothing to sneeze at!
Thanks for producing this blog, I’ve been following you for over a year now and love any of your posts, especially ones that I can find local variants of to try on my own after your recommendation. Though chocolate is always a favorite.
Congrats Cybele!!!!
I have been following your blog for about a year now…*thinks* yup, just after Easter ‘09. Loved the hysterical reviews and mouthwatering pictures! There is no way I can pick a favorite review. I do have to say that I love the Peeps Match Ups!!! What will you come up with next? lol!
happy anniversary! i love the reviews of the hi-chew flavors. i tried (and subsequently loved) hi-chew because your reviews are so descriptive and detailed. thanks!
My favorite reviews are of those candy bars that have been around forever, but I forget to eat them. I like being reminded of something so good.
i love all the posts about the new varieties of skittles that come out. i especially love the one about the new fizzy ones.
happy anniversary, you have a great blog. i look forward to reading it all the time
I would have to say that my favorite post was definately the “The 110 Essential Candies for Candivores” back in january. I was shocked at how many of these i had tried in less than the last year, mainly because of online candy blogs like yours.
My favorite blog post was on Konpeito. I had seen the little candies in Spirited Away, but never knew that they were real. I’ve looked all over for them in local Asian groceries since. I still haven’t seen them though.
I am not sure my favorite candy but I did go check out Sahagun in Portland based on your review from a while ago. I love, love , love their caramels.
Thanks and congrats.
I really appreciated your posts about chocolate quality and the pending federal law. And of course I appreciate any time you review or mention DOTS, since they are my favorite candy.
Congratulations!
This is one of my favorite emails every day! I pore over it and then come to the website to see the pictures in glorious detail.
My favorite post has to be “Don’t Mess With Our Chocolate” because I didn’t know anything about the legislation or the changes made to candy bars. Education is a great gift. I’ve been sending plenty of people to your blog to read that article and telling people who won’t read the blog about it.
Of course, anytime you mention Cadbury eggs I’m drooling!
Thanks for all you do!
Congrats Cybele! Your blog is one of my favorites, and may have inspired me to create one of my own in the same vein (more on that in the coming months)!
My favorite post is probably the one on Reese’s Eggs, since I contributed a bit to the “mystery”. Of course, many of your posts have prompted me to scour stores to find certain candies - most recently the Wonka Fruit Marvels. Looking forward to many more reviews!
Congratulations! I really enjoy the way you write about candy. It’s a winning combination of whimsy and scientific detail.
I think my favorite posts are the ones about the candy at Aldi’s because until I read them it would never have occurred to me in a million years that Aldi’s could actually have decent quality chocolate. I have since purchased some, and find your reviews right on. So thanks for helping me feed my chocolate tooth cheaply.
5 years! Congrats!! Here’s to many more!
pick 1 post that’s my favorite? that’s really hard to do. i love hte straight reviews of candy. i enjoy the eat with your eyes because the pictures are so mouth watering, but my favorite posts are the ones where i learn something.
i was a casual candy eater, not necessarily splurging for the best candy. splurging was getting some imported cadbury or godiva from the mall.
then someone linked me to a post about some single origin chocolate, where you really explained about where chocolate comes from and why these bars are special. then it occurred to me that candy wasn’t just something for my sweet tooth, there was something t learn about candy.
i also like when you discuss the candy and the companies that make them. how an old candy has changed company hands and changed over the years.
i still love some basic candy from the candy aisle in the drug store, but now i keep my eyes open for some of the interesting candy you review, and knowing “something” about the candy or the company that makes it.
thanks, i love reading your blog every day
Congratulations on 5 great years and best wishes for many more, Cybele!
Tic Tac Grapefurit is great and I love the comment below about how Ferrero has changed the packaging just slightly. The old polystyrene that made such a satisfying rattling sound is gone and now they’re using polypropylene which cuts energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions.
I hope they are a trend setter to save the planet “one candy package at a time”!

Thank you! I have been following for about a year…I guess my favorite reviews are the ones that help me skip candy that I would have bought out of curiosity.
Two standouts, though….I don’t remember which candy you were reviewing, but you mentioned doing something was like the candy version of shark-finning…I still giggle.
The other was that crazy blue marshallow pop monster Easter candy….I couldn’t believe it existed, so I went out and bought a couple to give to my loved ones! (nothin’ sez lovin’ like….)
Candy on!
Love the review of Bonkers…cracks me up. Been following your blog for 3 years….please keep writing! Congratulations!
I followed you from Twitter and Facebook. I am so happy that you guys have been so successful. You seem like genuinely awesome people! Congratulations and many more successes to you in the future!
Happy 5th anniversary Candy Blog ^__^
I can’t think of a specific favorite post but… I heart the Candy Expo ones :D Get Silly Ice Cream Candies sounded crazy :D
Thanks for providing such entertaining & comprehensive reviews for all these years. Your blog is a daily habit for me.
I really liked the Pink Grapefruit Mentos post.
Also, you’ve shown me a world of black licorice I never knew existed!
I love it here! I’ve been reading regularly for years. I like the grapefruit posts, mentos and tic tacs but I’ve still not been able to find either one to try for myself. I also love the candy expo posts as I get to fantasize about being in a giant room full of candy.
Wow, 5 years! That’s amazing! Your blog is always the first place I go to whenever I need information on new and old candy. Thank you for all the hard work you’ve put into this for all of us candy fans.
It’s hard to pinpoint just one post that’s my favorite. I love the Peeps mash-ups. But I think your post regarding the Hershey fiasco from last summer was a real eye-opener.
Oh, and I also love the candy tease posts.
Peeps Smash-ups are always a fave! I’m beginning to love Eat with your Eyes. Oh, and the enormous candy-convention recaps are spectacular.
Congratulations! Five years is a long time to photograph, sample and review a whole bunch of candy. Thank you for all the work you do to keep this site going.
I’m torn between the post on Juntsuyu which made my mouth water, and the post in which you hilariously eviscerated the Fling’s packaging. Congratulations on your anniversary!!
Congrats on 5 years!
I don’t really have a favourite post - there’s just too many, but you’ve inspired me to try many new candies and slow down and appreciate the old stand-bys too.
I think my favorite post is about the Brach’s Bunny Hiding Eggs, and their imposters. It was hilarious!!
Love the blog, congratulations!
My favourites are the posts about the Aldi candy! Especially the one with the small Lübecker Marzipan. I was actually sad that I couldn’t find them after that review, cause they all looked wonderful… :(
My favorites are always the ones about dark chocolates, since I buy every dark chocolate I can get my hands on. You’ve also led me to the best maltballs ever made (Wilbur) and to a serious Theo Chocolate addiction!!
Not to mention it was through your blog I found NaNoWriMo - and have written 2 novels!!
In other words, without you I would be candy-less and novel-less.
Happy Anniversary - keep up the GREAT work!!
Happy blogiversary! My favorite post is when you reviewed Elmer’s Easter candy. Always happy to see New Orleans get its foodie and candy due!
Laissez les bons bonbons rouler!
Ciao,
Amy
Congratulations!
My favorite posts are all the bad ones! You’ve saved me lots of money that I might have spent on candy that would have turned out awful and got thrown right into the trash.
Thanks!
My favorite was the Anis de Flavigny post, as it led me to discover not only a new favorite candy, but also that I enjoy the floral flavors a great deal.
Thank you so much for this blog!
I’ve enjoyed many posts over the years. Great writing, pictures, and information: I remember reading your post on a MarieBelle Mayan Chocolate Bar (which I soon found and tried for myself) and learning what PGPR was.
Congrats on five years! I read your blog frequently and appreciate all of the work that you do to keep us informed on candy. The posts that I love are the posts that lead me to new candies that are really good. Two that I can think of are Giant Bumpy Nerds Jelly Beans and the Dark Chocolate with Sea Salt Bar by Lindt. So Good!
This is such a great blog! Happy 5 years! My favorite entry so far is the 110 Essential Candies for Candivores. That helped create my best to do list ever! Thanks!
I love this blog! I’m happy that it’s been 5 years! I don’t mean to repeat everyone, but my favorite post has definitely been the 110 Essential Candies. It’s given me a great guide of what to try.
Thank YOU! I love your blog. I think I’ll mention the latest post that got me in BIG trouble… it was the one about those ferrero-rocher like bonbons that TJs had for the holidays. I ate maybe 10 boxes of those by myself! lol
Best,
I like the posts about See’s candies. I love that place! Love walking in the store and smelling the whiff of the chocolate…(and getting the sample). Anyways, happy birthday to the blog!
My favorites are the gummy candy reviews. Gummies are probably my favorite, so I like reading and seeing the different types out there.
Congrats on the 5 years.
Congrats on 5 years of great information and beautiful photos. I have been really enjoying your new eat with your eyes feature. Your photos are always gorgeous and make me hungry.
I love the post about UK vs. US candy! I’ve made it my goal to try them all!!
WOW! 5 years! Congrats and Happy 5th Candy Blog! I’m here most everyday, can’t pick a favorite but I will say I love your reviews on any type of Japanese candy!
You must be fat
spencer - your fingers must be exhausted policing the internet for fat people. Or people you believe to be fat. Some of us have excellent self control and can eat candy and still be healthy. Good luck with that project of going around telling everyone they’re fat, though.
