   Coconut ice is, well… shredded coconut and pink. It’s probably one of those British “exotic, but not too much so as to be strange” concepts we picked up along the way.

   I really do think it is what each culture is accustomed to. I find Cadbury’s Dairy Milk to be the best chocolate I’ve ever had and find Hershey’s is very ... I don’t know how else to describe it… but it has that scratchy effect on the back of my throat as though I’ve thrown up a little… kind of acidic you could say but I suppose that is the difference in the regions, Australia tends to have very sweet chocolate and America more bitter chocolate.
   Having said that I agree, Snack isn’t the best variety then again I’m not one for flavoured fillings.

   Coconut ice is more sugar than anything else. For example the recipe I have has 1 cup of coconut to 6 cups of sugar with a cup of milk.

   Snack was my favourite chocolate bar as a kid. I think it was because five different flavours in one bar seemed like good value.
   Coconut ice is a type of slice (I think the American term may be bar) that mothers make to be sold at cake sales, school fetes etc. I think it is mainly made of shredded coconut, sugar and pink dye? Pretty gross. Give me jelly slice any day!

   Coconut Ice is a slice like you would make for a bake sale, kids birthday party or afternoon tea. It’s basically icing/frosting (i think it’s actually copha and sugar) with desicated coconut in it. You pour half into a slice tray (jellyroll tray?), tint the second half pink, pour that over the top and let it set, then cut into squares. It’s kinda gross but kids love it and it definitely cures your sweet tooth.

   I was born in the UK and moved to Australia and Australian chocolate definitely *does* taste different to UK chocolate- it’s made to not melt because it gets so darned hot here that the bitumen melts on the roads. Normal chocolate wouldn’t stand even half a chance here.

   i didn’t realise you guys don’t have Snack in the US. It definitely looks better when you have the whole block with rows and rows of it. i think it’s cute that each flavour is a different shape. The pattern on the caramel one is pretty.

   It made me think of the Necco Sky Bar, but with a crazier range of center flavors. The Turkish Delight sounds the best (even though I’m American ). My favorite tea is violet flavored.

   And Lori’s comments about melty chocolate in Australia make so much sense. Explains the texture of other Aussie chocolate I’ve had.

   This looks fun!  If I ever see it at World Market, I might pick one up!  I am, however, dismayed that you mentioned See’s Candy in the same grouping as Russell Stover and Whitman’s.  I am a See’s-aholic and find it head and shoulders above “drug store chocolate”!

   Cadbury’s do make an all turkish delight bar, as well as now owning Fry’s turkish delight. Personally I find both far too sickly. here in the UK cadbury’s snack is a chocolatre covered biscuit a bit like a graham cracker. although apparentyl once upon a time this version was marketed in the UK as well.

    It reminds me of the Seven Up bar that was around when I was a kid (about 40 years ago).  It had seven sections: orange jelly, maple, caramel, Brazil nut, fudge, coconut, and cherry.  Man, I miss those….

    I love Turkish Delight, the way it is made with Cadbury and Fry’s. Where does it say that it is coconut ice? I’ve never heard of it being that before, I don’t think coconut ice is an aussie thing. I’ve eaten this ever since I was a kid, the fillings are not meant to be runny.

    Agreed about the Seven Up bar, which I wish I’d been able to try.  I recently picked up a Sky Bar with the hopes of something fun, but it was too stale to fairly consider.  This one looks like lots of fun.

    All this chocolate is making me crave it.  I think I’ve tried Cadbury before, but I’m not so sure.  I will definitely have to go and see if I can find some at the store.

    In exciting news, a whole bunch of Cadbury’s british bars were recently designated kosher. However in Europe, they don’t print the kosher symbol on the packaging like the do in the U.S. You have to be privy to their special list to know which products are kosher. Go to kosher.org.uk and click on kosher product search and type in cadbury, it will return you a long list of products. Yay!

    Coconut Ice is awesome!

    It’s made from coconut, copha and some other stuff…

    It’s a real “home made” slice type thing in Australia. Better made home made.

    Very sweet. I mean VERY! “Gran’s Fudge” In Australia make a great coconut ice if you can get your hands on it.

    I love snack chocolate… It was always fun fighting over who got what piece ^_^

    I am from America and I found the Turkish Delight tasty.  I have had many floral tasting sweets and think that not enough people have.  My favorite was the pineapple though.

    The reason you probably didn’t like the Snack bar was you got the bar not the block.  The block has larger pieces and a better filling to chocolate ratio.

    Cadbury just brought out a limited edition block of milk chocolate with pineapple filling.  It’s the same pineapple as the snack chocolate, they used to make it back in 2001 so maybe they are going to do it every 9 years.

    I wish we got this in the UK - we had a similar type of bar called Fry’s Five Centres (like Fry’s Cream bars but with different flavoured segments) but sadly it was discontinued in 1992. I’d love it back

    Thanks for helping me confirm we had a version of cadburys snack in uk. No one else I know can remember it but I have very fond memories of it in the 70’s….  Although I have enjoyed the bars a friend brought me from Aus I have to admit the chocolate is not as nice as we enjoy in uk but PLEASE bring it back Mr Cadbuty !!!!

    You can make coconut ice at home, which many people do. The flavour is a traditional ‘made at home’ style product in Australia rhat’s often sold at bake sales and fetes. It’s delightful, and incredibly sweet.

    The Australian fudge company “Gran’s” makes a version of it, and distributes it in Australia. I doubt they export it, since it seems to be a pretty local treat.

    And that’s a recipe to make it. There are many others on google if anyone wants to try their hand at making it, I just posted one that seemed like the one I used to make as a kid. If you’ve ever made or eaten ‘white christmas’ it’s got a similar feel, from the copha. That cold, crumbly sort of feeling.

    Cadbury is easily the number #1 brand chocolate here in australia and the snack block is definately one of the most popular varieties. If i could make one change i would remove the coconut icy thingy and replace with peppermint….MMmmmmmm
