This is from a Giant Eagle store in Younstown, OH. I’ve always been so jealous of this candy selection and usually priced at $2.50 a pound it was quite a deal.
I feel like going candy shopping. Where do you get your best deals?
Cybele ~ You make me laugh-out-loud! For sure, your parents should have named you CANDY. Cybele IS nice, but CANDY, more appropriate!! Well, I do love the sweet stuff too .... not as much as you. Marshall’s often has interesting candies. You can rarely fine them again though. Also, 99 cent stores. Great bargins for (usually) very fresh candy. My grandparents (Dad’s side) owned a candy/soda shop when I was born. It was sold a few years later. All those candies (not all) in the photo above, were kept behind glass, w/little doors! Sweet memories. Today I buy candy whenever I see something (ingredients) good. Even though I do love it, chocolate causes me terrible headaches. A good idea is to have a small portion of chocolate early in the day, maybe after lunch. A fabulous replacement would be real butter caramels! Ohboy, they are my absolutely favs (Route 29 Napa .... yummy!)
Getting late. Can you go “candy shopping now?” Being that it’s 2 hours earlier in LA, there must be something opened somewhere to buy candy!
In Portland, Winco has a huge bulk department with a terrific selection of baking ingredients. They have candy, too, but nothing like that glorious Giant Eagle display. I always pick up some of those addictive pastel mints (Guittard? the ones with nonpareils on the bottom), which they carry in both large and small sizes. Winco’s prices are always really low. I don’t do my regular shopping there, but it’s a great place to stock up on staples and the bulk department is great.
Grocery Outlet often has interesting candy and good deals. Right now they have some Turkish-made Planter’s Peanut/Munch type bars at 3/$1. They’re quite yummy. Unfortunately, the fabulous Scharffenberger Sea Salt & Carmelized Almond bars are gone.
Trader Joe’s (of course), FuBon on 82nd for Asian candy, CostPlus when it’s convenient. I need a local source for Hopjes.
I just visited a Giant Eagle while visiting Ohio and the selection is huge. Everything is wrapped, which helps it stay cleaner. The bulk price was $3.99 per pound. I read somewhere that their most popular item is always Goetze’s Bulls Eye Caramel Creams.
I’d like to echo the comments about Giant Eagle and Wegman’s—both have great selections. Wegman’s offers perhaps the largest selection I’ve ever seen in a grocery chain—their candy aisle takes up more space than a small candy store.

I like how you can drop a quarter in a box and try two or three pieces.

Wegmans! I thought this picture was of Wegmans at first. Their bulk candy is displayed exactly like this!
