This candy cup has left me mystified. Is it really from Adams-Brooks? They don’t mention it on their website ... no one mentions it on their website on any of the internets. Have I stumbled across an inter-dimensional 99 cent store that sells candy unknown to us here?
Why is it called Cup-o-Gold anyway? The center is clearly white. The package is silver ... these things trouble me. But not enough to keep me from eating it.
Like the original Cup-O-Gold, this milk chocolate cup sports toasted coconut and almond bits in the chocolate. The ratio of chocolate to the filling is a little off. Upon my first small bite (not pictured), I didn’t hit filling, just chocolate. The second bite, which was sizeable (like the photo) didn’t hit filling. Finally on the fourth bite which by now meant half the cup was gone, I hit a small hidden cavity of filling. Instead of a light, frothy filling like the Cup-O-Gold, this one was a little tacky, a little stiff. The mint was barely perceptible.
I bought this thinking it’d be like a milk chocolate Junior Mint - a gooey minty cream center. Alas, the coconut competes too much with the scant mint. If there were less chocolate and more filling, perhaps it wouldn’t seem so overpowering. However, the package does say thick rich milk chocolate, so who am I to go expecting things not advertised?

Commenting is not available in this channel entry.Here’s one for you. Have you ever tried a Valomilk? It’s a cup candy that has a super airiated marshmallow center. It’s soooo delicate that if you ship it by air it’ll explode so the company only ships by ground.

Dadio, I’ve heard a lot about the Valomilk and I’ve never seen them here in Los Angeles. I know I must have had one when I was a kid, but I have no recollection of it. (Trauma or just not remarkable enough?)
However, I will be in the midwest to visit family soon, so I’ll check to see if someplace around there carries them. If not, I plan on being in Chicago next summer and I know they have a few places that carry them.
My website will carry them. I used to have them on my original site and they were very popular. Russel Sifer is the owner of the company and he’s a good ole boy that restarted the family business with all the original equipment and recipes. He’ll talk your ear of if you get him going.
Dadio - I hope you’ve had a chance to read Steve Almond’s book Candy Freak - he went and toured the Valomilk factory and interviewed Sifer.
He’s got a lot of candy nostalgia material in there that so many of us that grew up in the 50s to 70s can really identify with.
It’s available in paperback now.
Since you’re on the Valomilk topic, we can get them just about everywhere here in Kansas City. There’s even a Thai restaurant I frequent that has a basketful of them at the dessert end of their weekend lunch buffet.
