I know it’s Halloween, but I’ve decided to cover chocolate covered fruit today. I’ve just had a craving for it, maybe it’s because it’s fall or maybe it’s because I’m lacking some micronutrients or something. I’ve also discovered that chocolate covered fruit is great for snacking on while writing. Especially when mixed with a few nuts like plain raw almonds and pretzels.

Trader Joe’s and their wonderful panned candy supplier have done it again. I just spotted Figments a couple of weeks ago and picked them up immediately. They’re dried black mission fig pieces covered in dark chocolate.
The pieces are quite variable, some as large as the tip of my finger and others the size a sunflower seed. The big ones, of course, were the best because there was a high density of both chocolate and fig. The figness got lost in the smaller pieces.
Dried figs have a wonderful earthy flavor to them, less sweet and tart than raisins. There’s the added bonus of the texture of the seeds, which some people don’t care for, but I think of as tree caviar.
Sometimes the chocolate overpowered the figness and sometimes the figness just wasn’t very powerful. This is definitely an excellent treat to have by your side when writing a novel. (Which I plan to start tonight at midnight, but have sadly eaten all my Figments already.)

Commenting is not available in this channel entry.Eating fruits is good and eating them wrapped in chocolate is better and more tasty. Great initiative to combine.
We have nothing like Trader Joe’s here, sadly. I wish we had.
(I’m still going to start my novel today though - I’ll just fall back on my ginger sweets.)
does anyone make chocolate covered dried strawberries? that sounds yummy to me.
Hey, I just picked these up last week to add to the craft service table at a job I was working on. Lucky for me, there was only one other fig lover (i.e; smart person) on set, so I’ve a bunch leftover. Yeah, they’re real good.
Cheryl: I bought (dark) chocolate covered dried strawberries not long ago in the bulk bins at Winco Supermarket in Portland. Quite good, but figs, ginger and orange peel are better.
I’m drooling at the thought of these.
On a non-candy related comment, I to am a NaNoWriMo-ite. Will you be blogging yours? I shall.
I just wanted to comment that the fact that so far nearly 30% of the people reading this blog and participating in your poll are not giving out halloween candy. Candy afficianados! :-(
I picked up a box of the “Figments” last week. Yum! Although the name makes it sound like they will have mint in them. To me, at least. And I’m surprised they are irregularly shaped, since the figs are not chopped up pieces, but more of a fig paste.
And Courtney - speaking for myself, my apartment does not get trick-or-treaters, or else I would happily pass out (buy and eat) lotsa candy. But there’s a locked gate, and stair cases, and walkways. Not convenient.
Courtney to be fair i’d give out stuff if my country celebrated the holiday. Perhaps there are just a large number of international blog visitors?
Hey wait - are these related to those chocolate covered fig candies you reviewed last year? Or were those chocolate bars with figs?? (same company producing them, perhaps?) Anyway, I’ll have to check my TJ for these, and get some for my chocolate and fig-loving mother-in-law (who loved the Fran’s chocolate-dipped figs).
My novel writing writing ‘candy’ are Kinder Schoko-Bons. God are they addictive! Although i’ve eaten half the bag and havn’t even started yet.
Drug Detox - do figs have some detoxification properties I’m not aware of? Or is chocolate the drug we need to stay away from?
Barbara - ginger sweets sound pretty good to me.
cheryl - the other review I did for Queen Anne Orange ... that company makes chocolate covered dried strawberries, though I’ve never seen them in stores.
Jo - yeah, sometimes it’s nice to be a little less common, isn’t it!
Velvet - sadly they’re all gone now!
Scott - yes, I do blog about my nanoprocess - that’s the Fast Fiction blog also hosted here on this site.
http://www.typetive.com/fastfiction
(I haven’t updated it because I’ve been traveling on novel business.)
Courtney - yeah, check out the results page, I think we have an explanation for that (besides, if everyone bought candy, there wouldn’t be any left to go on clearance sale!)
Kate - I thought they’re were pretty meaty pieces. I know that I’ve bought dried figs before and they’re pretty much like that.
Tricia - these are a little different than the Figamajigs, these have far more chocolate on them (but of course that means more fat too). I think the Figamajigs folks introduced a plain chocolate/fig piece thing earlier this year, but I haven’t tried them yet. I got some AWESOME figgy items in San Francisco earlier this week which I’ll be covering soon.
leigh - Schoko-Bons! (I had to look them up) Perfect for writing as they look like a one-bite item!
Cheryl,
With regard to your strawberry search, check out today’s post on Sugar Savvy: http://sugarsavvy.net/2006/11/07/cran-tastic/
Yeah, that’s me who wrote it. Check out the Emily’s site (linked in article), they make a dark chocolate-covered strawberry in addition to the cranberry. I haven’t had ‘em, but judging from the cran, I have confidence in them. They were at Target (in Portland) last week.
These were addicting… when they were gone I realized I had some Black Mission Figs and paired them with some semi sweet chips I had… just as addicting!!
I just got some of these this afternoon and the container is already half gone. They are sooo addicting!
I just returned from Trader Joe’s and unfortunately these marvelous little fig/chocolate morsels have been discontinued due to “slow sales” across the country. I find that really hard to believe as they were the best thing I’ve bought in the store! I too found them addicting. Maybe if everyone writes the company (Trader Joe’s), they can be convinced to bring them back.
Oh No! Discontinued?!?!? I just bought some last week! Maybe I should go back and buy what they had left….
